Easy DIY Car Maintenance

Keeping up with major maintenance items isn’t easy and many drivers forego minor maintenance items like the battery, windshield wipers, and headlights. However, each of these is important and easy to take care of, so here are a few easy DIY car maintenance items from us here at Riverside Ford.

Properly maintaining your battery is crucial to maximizing its lifespan. Checking the battery connection can ensure it’s being properly cared for.

Remove the battery cables, starting with the negative wires first. Next, clean the posts with a wire brush and corrosion removal fluid. You can make your own fluid by mixing baking soda and water.

Next, use the wire brush to clean the terminals, then rinse with water and dry. Reattach the cables, starting with the positive wires first.

Windshield wipers are some of the cheapest replacement parts on any vehicle. They’re fairly easy to install, as well.

Pull the wiper away from the windshield and press the small tab on beneath the wiper to remove the blade. Next, set the new wiper into the arm and lower it until the plastic clip snaps into place. Finally, lower the wiper back onto the windshield and repeat on the other side.

Replacing a burnt-out headlight is fairly simple. Taking a few minutes to do so can significantly increase your safety on the road.

Pop the hood and find the plug-shaped bulb holder—it should have three wires connected to it. Remove the wire harnessing, then release the metal clip, plastic catch, or screw.

Remove the dead bulb and use a clean rag to wipe down the new bulb. Next, place the new bulb into the back of the headlight. Secure the bulb by plugging the wiring back in.
